Come enjoy this sleepy little village on the Des Moines River which once was an important port-of-call for the early steamboats. Tree-covered hills hem in the little valley with the county park lined up between the historic buildings and river. A booming town of over 500 in the late 1800's, Bentonsport, now much smaller, is a popular retreat where history, fun and relaxation are part of the aviance. Several Mormon families after leaving Nauvoo, stayed in Bentonsport anywhere from a few months to several years in order to build up supplies to continue west. The Mason House Inn is one testament to the craftmanship of those early pioneers. Current day artists such as working blacksmith Bill Printy and his wife Betty who is the local potter are well known for their beautiful craftsmanship. Sculptor Chris Bennett also known widely for his talent on sculpting, along with other local artists, continue on some of the traditions of the past and can be seen plying their crafts during events or by chance. Check the Bentonsport Events or Villages Folk School for classes. Visitors can enjoy the rose gardens which reside in the ruins of the old mills along the Des Moines River, stroll across a century-old iron bridge, shop, picnic, hike, tour museums, or enjoy the local Inn with different activities or secluded campgrounds along the river. Festivals and other special events are held often, including musical entertainment and hands-on educational experiences in artwork. Visit the historic buildings such as the restored Greef General Store, filled with antiques, crafts, artwork and museum, along with the other quaint shops with crafts, jewerly and rock shop. The Indian Artifact Museum is a masterpiece of wood designs background and display cases setting off over 4,ooo artifacts.
