                          Cottonwood Country Crafts

                          Picture
I have been a crafter for many years. Starting in 4-H sewing when I was 10. While working at Hy Vee as a full time cake decorator for almost 20 years I was able to continue with quilting and setting up at craft shows. After retiring I opened Cottonwood  Country Crafts in the Bank Building in Bentonsport with Ernestine Topping and sold painted woodcrafts and other craft items.  After leaving there my love for Bentonsport brought me back as a clerk at the Greef Store and a space for my crafts. Due to health I retired from there in 2010 but still have a craft space where you will find baby quilts, snap happy cosmetic bags, Kleenex tissue covers, kids car fun, embroidered tea towels, purses, red hat items and a number of other sewn and quilted items.

                          Long's Crafts

                          Picture
I have been crafting for many, many years.  My interests came from my mother who could do almost anything.  I remember starting out at an early age making my own doll clothes by hand then on an old treadle sewing machine.  I love most anything that has to do with your hands - crocheting, embroidery, cross stitch, latch hook, sewing, etc.  In the past,  I sold my crafts in craft malls in Kansas, Illinois, and Iowa then took a breather a few years ago.  But I enjoyed crafting so much that when I quit work, I just had to find some place I could continue it and found that place at Greef General Store.
In my corner you can find kitchen towels with crocheted tops to display in your kitchen or to dry your hands, crocheted dishcloths, floral arrangements,  washable facial scrubbies, hand-embroidered pillowcases and other items.

If my face looks familiar, it's probably because of my history with Van Buren County.  I was born and raised in Keosauqua, and had an active role in the Bentonsport National Historic District for 15 years.  As site manager for the county-owned properties in Bentonsport, I fell in love with the place and its people.  I even lived in one of the old brick houses for 3 years!

When I moved to my current home in Iowa Falls in 2002, I retained a booth space in the Greef General Store where I can sell my handmade rugs and hats.  I take great pleasure in combining colors and workmanship to create useful and decorative products.

I've been weaving rag rugs on a 4-harness LeClerc floor loom since 1986.  I generally recycle used clothing, blankets and sheets, and other fabric.  I also knit stocking caps from wool yarn that is spun on my handmade walnut spinning wheel.  I learned to knit as a 4th grader, and have been a spinner for over 35 years.  Most of the wool that I spin is produced by the sheep of Lamb Lane Farm in Ft. Madison, Iowa, and I'm proud that my items are truly "Made in Iowa!"
